Accsys Technologies, producer of Accoya modified wood, has declared its support for the new EU Timber Regulation, which is set to tighten current laws, and seeks to eliminate illegal forestry and logging, and encourage sustainable forest management.
With the Regulations set to come into force in March this year, the control of illegal timber trading is topical issue for the timber industry.
Paul Clegg CEO at Accsys Technologies, said the company is pleased to be able to support the proposed Regulations which are “set to add a great deal of credibility to the timber and logging industry.”
“Much of the raw timber used by Accsys is harvested from New Zealand, where the government has taken precautions with an aim to prevent illegal logging from happening. Accsys’ timber is sourced from 100% FSC or PEFC certified timber, which goes a long way towards ensuring legality in the supply chain. Compliance with the EUTR will support this further.
“We expect the EUTR will have a positive impact on Accoya, as architects, specifiers and end users favour transparency and legality. The Regulations may also limit the availability of certain species of timber from some areas, encouraging more buyers to choose Accoya wood which is widely available from distributors across the world.
“Accsys Technologies sees the implementation of the EUTR as a very positive step forward for the timber and logging industry. With a sometimes marred reputation on the global market, it is time for the industry to be responsible and transparent at all times.”
Under the new Regulations, any organisation handling wood or wood products within the EU must follow a strict process of due diligence, assessing the risk that those products may have come from an illegal source and acting to mitigate any risk identified. Records must be kept to track the purchase and sale of timber and timber products. The Regulations seek to prohibit illegally harvested timber and timber products from being placed on the EU market.
Accoya is one of the most advanced modified wood products on the market using the latest in wood acetylation technology to deliver outstanding levels of performance, stability and durability. Often exceeding the high-quality and aesthetic attributes of tropical hardwoods, it also boasts excellent environmental credentials by using wood sourced from FSC certified and sustainable forests – while being 100% non-toxic.
