Mark Farmer, a leading voice on construction innovation and sustainable development, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Future Homes Hub.

He brings over three decades of experience in the construction and real estate sectors and will contribute strategic insight on industry transformation, modern methods of construction (MMC), and workforce challenges.

The Future Homes Hub was established to facilitate the collaboration needed within and beyond the homebuilding sector to help meet the UK’s legally binding net zero and wider environmental goals, working closely with homebuilders, supply chains, infrastructure, finance and government departments.

Mark is a founder of Cast and served as its CEO from 2016 to 2025. He is widely recognised for authoring the landmark 2016 government review, Modernise or Die, and from 2019 to 2023 was the Government’s Champion for Modern Methods of Construction in Housebuilding. In 2023 he was appointed by the Department for Education to lead a review of the Construction and Engineering Construction Industry Training Boards, published in January 2025.

Mark’s appointment further strengthens the Future Homes Hub Board, which provides strategic oversight and ensures that the UK’s new homes sector delivers high-quality, low-carbon, climate-resilient homes. The Board comprises senior leaders from across government, industry, housing, finance, sustainability and innovation.

Ed Lockhart, Chief Executive of the Future Homes Hub, said: “Mark’s track record in driving construction innovation and challenging outdated practices is second to none. His insights and experience will be vital as we support the sector to build high performing sustainable homes at scale – with the skills, supply chains and policy environment to match. We are delighted to welcome him to the Board.”

Mark Farmer, Future Homes Hub board member, said: “The Future Homes Hub is playing a pivotal role in coordinating the sector’s response to climate and environmental challenges. I’m looking forward to contributing to its strategic direction and helping ensure that we embed innovation, sustainability and resilience into the mainstream of homebuilding.”

The Hub’s work includes setting the long-term roadmap for change, agreeing consistent methods to measure performance developing technical solutions for regulatory changes, collaborating to overcome implementation barriers, and proposing industry-led approaches to future policy. The Hub has formed specific partnerships between the sector and Government on key areas of policy including the Future Homes Standard, Biodiversity Net Gain, embodied carbon and smart water management.

The Future Homes Hub operates as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, with all the UK’s largest homebuilders, a cross-section of smaller homebuilders, the largest housing associations and the key supply chain, financers and consultants to the sector.
