Following a resident-led voting process, Foster + Partners in collaboration with Samsung C&T, has been appointed to design a regenerative residential neighbourhood in Apgujeong District 4 – one of Seoul’s most sought-after waterfront districts.
Comprising eight residential towers, the masterplan features a layered, mixed-use ground level with leisure and retail spaces, accentuated by a significant new park.
Patrick Campbell, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners, said: “We are delighted to reveal our designs for the Apgujeong District 4 residential neighbourhood.
“Anchored in the existing urban fabric of Seoul, the reimagined riverside district creates a major new park that seamlessly connects the Gangnam District’s bustling Dosan-daero boulevard directly to the Han riverbank. A thoughtfully curated series of green spaces reinforces the development’s profound connection to nature.”
The new apartment buildings are designed from the inside-out to maximise residents’ wellbeing, comfort, and connection to the city. Residences feature triple-aspect living spaces and generous terraces, ensuring an abundance of natural light, cross-ventilation, and panoramic views over the Han River.
At the centre of the neighbourhood, there are a series of communal amenity spaces that include wellness, educational and leisure facilities, where the new and existing residents can come together, forging a strong sense of community.
Dan Sibert, Senior Partner, Foster + Partners, added: “The towers optimise views across the Han River and the city. The rhythm of the façades reflects the curves of the river, and they feature an articulated sequence of terraces that create a visual dynamism along Seoul’s skyline.”
The project aligns with Seoul Plan 2030 – the urban redevelopment framework that prioritises bottom-up participatory urban planning, which directly incorporates residents’ voices into decision making. It also targets LEED Gold attainment, highlighting the project’s sustainable commitments.
