Brett Martin’s polycarbonate panels illuminate aircraft hangar

Brett Martin’s Marlon Clickfix polycarbonate panels have been installed as part of the rebuilding of Hangar 2 at Manchester Airport, undertaken to accommodate Jet2.com’s expanding aircraft fleet. Made to order in 12m lengths, and with excellent light transmission as well as thermal performance, Marlon Clickfix panels provided the ideal solution for the hangar doors. Maximising the amount of natural light, the panels have played a fundamental role in creating ultimate conditions for vital maintenance work on the fleet.

Hangar 2 is an essential piece of infrastructure for Jet2.com’s Manchester operations, providing interior space for crucial engineering and maintenance work. However, with the fleet expanding, the hangar needed to be replaced to accommodate increased numbers of aircraft and to provide modernised facilities. As such, Jet2.com worked with TSL and Todd Architects on the new 6,300sqm hangar, which enables three narrow body aircraft to be worked on simultaneously. The new hangar also houses a colleague welfare area and an apprentice training suite, with classrooms and workshops dedicated to supporting the company’s next generation of engineers.

Jewers Doors was brought onto the project by TSL to supply the huge hangar doors. As a specialist provider with extensive experience, the team were familiar with Brett Martin’s products and had previously selected Marlon Clickfix on numerous Hangar projects throughout the UK and worldwide. For Jet2’s new hangar at Manchester Airport, Jewers Doors provided a set of 8 Esavian 126-SBR sliding doors, with the Glass Clear Marlon Clickfix panels making up the body of the doors.

The doors were required to cover an extremely large opening of 78.5 metres wide and 19.32 metres high. Brett Martin’s products are ideally suited as they can be manufactured to order in lengths of up to 12 metres, reducing the number of joints required and ensuring the weight of the doors is kept to a minimum and structural integrity is maximised.

Stephen Wallwork, Project Manager at Jewers Doors commented: “The specification for the doors called for the cladding system to be compliant with strict technical requirements, such as U values and Light Transmission and this is where the Brett Martin Marlon Clickfix panels really excel, and so were a natural choice for the project.”

Marlon Clickfix Polycarbonate panels boast a U value of 0.99W/m2K and a maximum light transmission of 74%, making them an excellent solution for a range of façade applications. What’s more, with a range of glazing frame systems, Clickfix provides a complete solution for customers that can be applied to vertical facades, pitched roofs or as a curved rooflight.
