Hydronic radiant heating and cooling systems are increasingly being considered as an alternative to conventional terminal-based HVAC solutions in commercial buildings. By operating with relatively low heating water temperatures and, where appropriate, relatively high cooling water temperatures, radiant systems can support efficient building operation, occupant comfort and greater architectural flexibility.

Unlike conventional high-temperature radiator systems, hydronic radiant systems circulate water through pipework integrated into building surfaces such as floors, walls or ceilings. Energy is transferred between these surfaces and the occupied space, providing a more uniform operative temperature and helping to reduce localised hot and cold spots.
One of the key advantages from an MEP perspective is the ability to operate at lower water temperatures in heating mode. This makes radiant systems particularly well suited to low-temperature heat sources such as heat pumps and can contribute to improved system efficiency and reduced operational carbon emissions.
Radiant systems can also be designed to provide sensible cooling by circulating water through suitable floor, wall or ceiling surfaces. Cooling design requires careful consideration of surface temperatures, indoor humidity and dew point to prevent condensation. Appropriate ventilation and, where required, dehumidification therefore remain important elements of the overall HVAC strategy.
Commercial applications
In environments such as care homes, custodial facilities and supermarkets, radiant systems can offer practical benefits in addition to energy performance.
In care homes, low-temperature radiant heating can provide gentle, even thermal conditions while reducing the need for exposed high-temperature emitters. This can support safer, more accessible spaces and provide designers with greater flexibility when coordinating room layouts.
In custodial environments, integrating the heating system within the building fabric can reduce reliance on exposed wall-mounted emitters, potentially reducing opportunities for damage or tampering and simplifying the coordination of secure building services.
In supermarkets and other retail environments, radiant systems can reduce the requirement for perimeter heating emitters and other visible terminal units. This can free valuable wall space for shelving and displays while helping maintain comfortable conditions for staff and customers.
Designing for heating and cooling
Radiant heating and cooling can be incorporated into both new-build and refurbishment projects. Where cooling is required, it should be considered at an early design stage so that cooling loads, available surface area, water temperatures, controls, ventilation and humidity management can be evaluated as part of the overall building-services strategy.
Depending on the application and calculated loads, underfloor heating can be combined with radiant wall or ceiling systems to provide heating and sensible cooling. Correct hydraulic design, zoning and controls are essential to ensure that the system responds effectively to changing loads while maintaining occupant comfort.
When integrated with an appropriate ventilation strategy, heat source and control system, a well-designed radiant solution can deliver high levels of thermal comfort while supporting low-temperature heating, energy-efficient operation and architectural flexibility.
