Specifying Spandrel Panels: Putting Performance and Compliance at the Forefront

Latest News Thu, Oct 8, 2026 9:01 AM

Spandrel panels form an important part of the building envelope, particularly within curtain walling and glazed facade systems. Typically positioned between areas of glazing, they can help conceal structural elements while contributing to the thermal, fire and structural performance requirements of the facade.

For architects and specifiers, however, selecting a spandrel panel is about more than appearance. Understanding how a system has been tested, its reaction to fire classification and its performance under different conditions is essential when developing a compliant facade specification.

Metalline’s ULTIMA Aluminium Spandrel Panels have been developed to provide a tested solution supported by comprehensive technical documentation. ULTIMA panels with a PPC finish achieve an A2-s1,d0 reaction to fire classification in accordance with BS EN 13501-1, with the classification covering a defined range of aluminium skins, Fabrock mineral wool insulation and panel configurations.

Performance extends beyond reaction to fire. ULTIMA has undergone soft and hard body impact testing in accordance with CWCT TN75/76, achieving Class 1 serviceability performance and negligible risk classifications across the tested configurations. The panels have also been tested for wind resistance in accordance with CWCT guidelines, including serviceability, safety and ultimate wind resistance testing.

Bringing the evidence together

To make this technical information easier to access during the specification and product approval process, Metalline has produced its Gateway 2 Key Reports and Approval Documents Pack.

Rather than requiring project teams to source individual pieces of supporting information, the pack brings together key documentation covering reaction to fire classification, CWCT impact and wind resistance testing, durability, U-value guidance and Metalline’s ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications.

The durability testing is particularly useful when considering longer-term facade performance. ULTIMA was subjected to hygrothermal weathering in accordance with EAD 040914-00-0404:2018, with test cycles designed to simulate an operational period of 25 years. All samples met the specified test criteria.

Project-specific U-value calculations, condensation risk analysis and acoustic calculation reports can also be provided on request, helping project teams assess the system against individual project requirements.

Supporting better-informed specification

Presented by Metalline’s technical team, the CPD provides practical guidance around the design and specification of aluminium spandrel panels and rainscreen cladding, helping attendees develop a clearer understanding of the considerations involved when selecting facade systems.

The session explores the differences between A1 and A2 classified solutions, the role of spandrel panels within the building envelope and the importance of considering supporting test evidence as part of the specification process. It also provides an opportunity for architects and other facade professionals to discuss technical considerations and how these can apply to individual projects.

Combined with Metalline’s Gateway 2 Key Reports and Approval Documents Pack, the CPD provides two complementary levels of support: practical guidance to help inform specification decisions, alongside access to the testing, certification and performance information available for the ULTIMA system. The Gateway 2 Pack itself brings together documentation covering fire classification, impact and wind resistance, durability, thermal performance and quality and environmental management.

Together, these resources reflect Metalline’s “Where Quality Meets Compliance” approach, giving architects, specifiers and facade professionals greater access to the information they need when considering aluminium spandrel panels for their projects.
