Think Timber, strategic partner to the UK timber staircase sector, has launched a new digital platform designed to give manufacturers, housebuilders and specifiers clearer visibility into the factors driving timber pricing and supply chain volatility.
At the centre of the new website is an “Industry Insights” hub, bringing together live data on materials, freight, currency and UK market conditions, alongside a daily summary of key developments affecting the timber supply chain.
The platform has been developed in response to a longstanding issue across construction: procurement decisions being driven by headline price, without full visibility of the underlying cost pressures shaping the market.

“Too much of this industry is still buying on surface-level price,” said Gav Brown, Managing Director at Think Timber. “Often it comes down to a matter of pennies as the deciding factor in choosing a supplier. But timber prices don’t move in isolation. It’s affected by everything from shipping costs to currency fluctuations and housing demand. If you don’t understand those factors, you’re not really managing cost; you’re simply reacting to it.”
The launch comes at a time when specialist manufacturers are facing sustained margin pressure, driven by rising labour, compliance and operational costs, combined with ongoing expectations of falling prices. Think Timber has already highlighted that these pressures are being felt most acutely in labour-intensive areas such as staircase manufacturing, where margins remain tight and capacity is increasingly constrained.
At the same time, the Staffordshire-based business warns that greater price competition is contributing to wider risks across the market, including the use of lower-quality or non-compliant materials and reduced investment in specialist capability.
Gav continued: “The gap between expectation and reality is growing. Costs are going up, but the expectation that prices should come down hasn’t gone away. That’s not sustainable for manufacturers, and ultimately, it’s not good for quality or safety either.”
The Industry Insights hub is designed to act as a central reference point for the sector, helping users better understand why timber prices change and how wider economic factors influence supply. The system aggregates data from multiple sources and presents it in a simplified format, covering:
A daily “Timber Rundown” summarises key changes and trends, with the aim of making complex market information more accessible to time-pressured industry professionals.
Gav added: “This isn’t about telling people what to think. It’s about giving them access to the information they need to make better decisions. If the industry has better visibility, we get better outcomes: better planning, better specification, and a more stable supply chain.”
The launch also supports wider calls for greater transparency across the construction supply chain, particularly around sourcing, compliance and long-term value.
Think Timber has previously raised concerns about the impact of unethical or illegal material sourcing undermining responsible businesses and distorting competition. By improving access to information and market context, the business aims to help customers move beyond short-term price comparisons and consider the broader factors influencing cost, quality and risk.
“This is about building something more sustainable for the long term,” Gav concluded. “Not just for us, but for the customers and partners we work with. The industry doesn’t need more noise. But it does need smarter information and better tools. That’s what we’re aiming to provide.”
