Civil engineering projects compete in awards

A Shropshire project has been entered in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) West Midlands Regional Awards and will compete with seventeen other projects for the prestigious accolade of ICE West Midlands Awards 2014 Overall Winner.

The Cosford Nitrates project has been entered for the Communication category with the chance of being a category winner as well as winning the top award.

Clear communication is a key aspect of all successful civil engineering projects. The project delivered by Mott MacDonald Bentley in partnership with Severn Trent Water and Amey, clearly demonstrated that promoting stakeholder engagement can assist with scheme delivery, the ability to delight the customer and furthermore enhance the general public’s perception of civil engineering.

Open communication within the project team allowed the right solution to be delivered efficiently and effectively. This also enabled the project team to deliver on its promises to both the client and to the customer. The project was completed on-time, and to-budget but also to a quality both the team and client were proud of.

The £2.5M scheme also involved the innovative reuse of existing infrastructure assets. The project helped to blend three existing water sources and crucially enabled the continued delivery of high quality water to the West Wolverhampton area.

ICE West Midlands Chairman, Peter Mills who will preside over this year’s Awards said: “There has never been a more important time to recognise the value of the civil engineering projects which help to improve the lives of people in the West Midlands.

"These projects are delivered by dedicated professionals and the Awards celebrate their achievements and the professionalism and dedication they bring to project design and delivery.

"With the economy now improving and the excellent quality of entries this year, the civil engineering sector, looks well placed for growth in the next decade.”

The winner will be announced at the ICE West Midlands Awards Dinner which takes place at the ICC, Birmingham on 21 May where guest speaker Pete Waterman, Railway Entrepreneur, will present the Awards.
