STA launch design guide to separating distances

Binderholz, the X-LAM Alliance's European partner has been acknowledged by the Structural Timber Association (STA) for the company's support in conducting in-depth technical research to aide with the development of the Technical Design Guide for Separating Distances During Construction of CLT Structural Frame Buildings.

Derby-based B & K Structures and Binderholz formed the X-LAM Alliance back in 2011, bringing to the UK construction market a seamless and consistent way to supply cross laminated timber.

The Austrian based Binderholz is a specialist timber production organisation with five production plants across the country employing in excess of 1,150 staff and in 2012, Binderholz produced the most cross laminated timber in the world. From concept to completion, the Alliance has all the essential knowledge and data to create solid wood structures from design through to installation.

Binderholz is only one of two CLT manufactures referenced in the guide. The STA, supported by Binderholz, have derived an approach to the risk mitigation for a category of building construction, explicitly CLT.

The Binderholz products have been tested by BRE and witnessed by HSE. The results of the tests have informed and provided data from which the STA have derived a calculation approach which has been peer reviewed. The tables in this guidance are those generated by the STA calculation process.

This design guide - which is available to download on the STA website www.structuraltimber.co.uk - has been developed for design professionals and construction managers for the approach to design appropriate risk mitigation for CLT buildings. The construction applications of structures relevant to this paper are buildings such as houses, flats, schools, sports halls and civic centres.

With over 50 highly experienced and dedicated experts in structural analysis, building physics, CNC wood processing , planning and consultancy, together with a commitment to research and innovation, the X-LAM Alliance provide robust and sustainable solutions.
