Glendyne slates from Cembrit have been installed at The Lancasters, a high-profile, luxury development inLondon. Part new build, part refurbishment, the project features 60,000 of the Canadian blue/grey slates to complement the building incorporating 77 high-end, prestigious apartments.
The Lancastersoverlooks Hyde Parkand was originally an elegant parade of 15 magnificent stucco-fronted Grade11 listed houses. A key challenge for the refurbishment was to keep the grandeur of the original architecture. The entire interior of the existing building has been demolished and the brick and stucco facade retained in place by a temporary steel frame, until a new concrete frame was installed inside the retained facade. A completely new roof was needed, and when an alternative to Welsh slate was called for, Richardson Roofing suggested Glendyne to project architect, Nilsson of London, as the perfect substitute. Glendyne is similarly strong, consistent, easy-to-work and durable. Perhaps more importantly, in view of its prominent location, Glendyne’s blue/grey colour proved a good match for the original Welsh natural slates.
“The Lancasters was a huge scale project” says Andy North from Richardson Roofing Ltd. “To fit the new roof was a difficult task for even the most skilled roofer; with a substantial number of chimney abutments, roof hatches, smoke vents, and penetrations through the slated roof, all of which required the use of slate and half’s and on some occasion double slates. All penetrations had to be co-ordinated with the many other contractors over a long period of time but this was successfully achieved through close liaison with the project managers.”
Glendyne is a high quality slate that combines first-class performance and authenticity, to make it the ideal choice for specifiers and roofers working in the demanding UK new-build and roofing restoration market. All the Glendyne slates for The Lancasters were pre-holed and fixed with copper nails. Lead soakers, flashings, hip cappings and gutters were used along with lead cladding on 138nr dormer windows.
Glendyne natural roofing slate is available exclusively from Cembrit in the UK. Produced in the town of Saint Marc du Lac Long, Quebec, Glendyne is a distinctive blue-grey and perfectly suited for the UK specifier interested in the heritage and credibility of sourced products.
The Glendyne quarry is one of the most modern slate quarries in the world. The quarry operates a quality management system based on EN ISO 9001 which is externally audited. This standard is adhered to rigidly, as are all quality standard procedures required by each regional market the quarry supplies. Glendyne, like all natural slate from Cembrit, is tested to BS EN European standard, BS EN 12326-1:2004 which requires many of the laboratory tests (‘type testing’) to be performed at least annually and the factory production control (FPC) performed and recorded as a matter of routine by the producer.
