Housebuilders honoured for dedication to health and safety

The UK's safest house builders have been honoured by NHBC for their outstanding dedication to health and safety on site.

A total of 54 sites from across the country have been Commended in the first round of judging for NHBC's Health & Safety Awards 2015.

In 2012/13 the Health & Safety Executive reported a reduction in construction related deaths from 50 in 2011/12 to 44. Any number of deaths is unacceptable; it is however encouraging to see that house builders across the UK are placing health and safety practice high up on their agenda and over the last 40 years the number of fatal injuries in construction has substantially decreased.

Now in its 6th year, the Awards strive to celebrate and promote the success of house builders in keeping a safe environment onsite. The awards demonstrate the benefits of implementing good health and safety practices onsite while highlighting examples of good active management.

Following an intensive process of assessing and judging of entries, with site inspections conducted by NHBC's health and safety experts, the Commended winners have displayed commitment for protecting their employees, and the public by adopting high standards of on-site best practice. These Commended sites and their site managers will now compete for the Highly Commended, Regional and National titles to be announced on 3 July 2015.

Tom Kitchen, NHBC Health and Safety Operations Manager, said: "On behalf of NHBC we warmly congratulate all the Commended winners on gaining an NHBC Health and Safety Commended Award. All of those working at the 54 sites have made these awards possible, which recognises their commitment in providing the best in onsite health and safety standards.

"As the very positive start to the year continues, and new home registrations are at their highest levels since 2007, it's important the industry continues to deliver safe sites. Encouragingly, in the last 20 years construction sites in the UK have seen significant reductions in the numbers and rates of injuries related to workplace injury assisted by housebuilders across the UK placing health and safety practice high up on their agenda."
