More than 10,000 new homes were registered to be built in the UK in July according to NHBC’s latest registration statistics.
A total of 10,533 new homes (8,170 private sector; 2,363 public sector) were registered in July, compared to 15,151 (11,470 private sector; 3,681 public sector) 12 months ago.
Overall, there were 37,244 new home registrations in the rolling quarter (May 2016 – July 2016), compared to 43,891 in the same period last year.
However, during these three months several regions experienced a notable growth in registrations, compared to 2015, including the North East (+28%), Yorkshire & Humberside (+25%) and the South West (+11%).

As the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, NHBC's registration statistics are a lead indicator of UK house-building activity. For 80 years, NHBC has been committed to driving up quality and raising standards in housebuilding and has approximately 80% market share.
Commenting on the latest figures, NHBC Chief Executive Mike Quinton said: “July’s registration statistics show that the number of new homes being registered has fallen compared to the same period 12 months ago.
“This fall in numbers can largely be attributed to the industry caution experienced immediately after the EU referendum. Early indications show that new home registrations are already bouncing back, with August figures on course to top 2015.
“NHBC remains committed to support the industry to build new homes to the highest possible standards.”
During May ‘16 – July ’16, the number of NHBC new home registrations was 37,244, compared to 43,891 in the same period last year: 28,420 were registered in the private sector, compared to 32,575 in the same period last year; and 8,824 were registered in the public sector, compared to 11,316 in the same period last year.
Registrations refer to the process of a builder registering a new plot/home to be built in the coming months or weeks, to be covered by NHBC’s 10-year Buildmark warranty. Completions refer to when a new home is completed by the builder.
Changes can occur between figures published at different times owing to changes in policies and cancellations.
NHBC’s role is to support the industry in maintaining and improving the build quality of new homes for homebuyers, whilst providing the benefit of its 10-year Buildmark warranty protection, when required. NHBC does this through a wide range of activities, from standards setting through technical support to warranty and insurance.
NHBC is a non-profit distributing organisation with no shareholders. It invests any surplus into activities that improve new homes further, in particular through its research arm, the NHBC Foundation.
NHBC is the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK. NHBC’s ten-year Buildmark warranty covers around 80 per cent of new homes built in the UK, having covered nearly eight million homes since it began and currently protecting around 1.6 million homes.
