Energy generating house is a winner at CIBSE awards

An all-electric home that produces two-times more energy than it consumes won the Project of the Year - Residential category at this year’s CIBSE Building Performance Awards.

Designed by bere:architects, Lark Rise incorporates a 12kW rooftop solar array which enables the home to import 97% less energy from the electrical grid than the average UK house.

The judges said this scheme delivered “outstanding measured building performance, energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions”.

Devised by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, the Building Performance Awards recognise completed projects which can demonstrate outstanding in-use performance, along with awards for design, facilities management and products for their contribution to delivering outstanding building performance.

The Project of the Year - International Award was won by the EY Centre in Sydney, Australia. This 33-floor office tower developed and built by Mirvac delivers premium-grade office space whilst achieving demanding sustainability targets.

The tower incorporates a high-performance façade and an energy efficient demand-controlled ventilation system. The scheme also won the coveted best-of-the-best award and was crowned Building Performance Champion 2019. The judges described the scheme as “an exemplary project” and praised the “truly holistic approach to building performance and wellbeing”.

The Urban Sciences Building, Newcastle, engineered by BuroHappold Engineering, won the Project of the Year - Public Use category. This building is home to the University of Newcastle’s School of Computing and to researchers focused on the urban environment; it has been designed to function as a living laboratory to aid the development of new technologies to advance urban science.

Other 2019 CIBSE Building Performance Award winners include: WARM: Low Energy Building Practice, Cundall, Cavendish Engineers and Woodford Heating and Energy.

The CIBSE Building Performance Awards recognise the people, products and projects that demonstrate engineering excellence in the built environment.

They are the only industry awards that focus on actual, measured performance outcomes, not just design intent or performance specifications. Entries are open to any organisation, both within the UK and internationally, responsible for the design, commissioning, construction, installation and operation of low energy buildings and manufacturers whose products enable efficient energy consumption.

Judged by a panel of distinguished industry leaders, winners of the Awards are acknowledged as best in class. The 2019 Awards sponsors are ABB, CIBSE Patrons, CMR Controls, Ideal Commercial Boilers, Gratte Brothers, Imtech, Lochinvar, Panasonic, Tamlite Lighting and headline sponsor Baxi Heating.
