Park Farm, a 1760 Grade 2 listed property has put its trust in the leading supplier of sustainable heating systems, Windhager UK, to supply biomass heating. Windhager will thus help cut carbon emissions to the recently refurbished 8-bed Georgian farmhouse near Bath.
Park Farm was in need of a complete refurbishment so the decision was made to enter the renewable sector to heat the farmhouse that would provide a low CO2 solution. Located in an adjacent barn, a Windhager BioWIN Exklusiv 52kW cascade system has been installed connecting to the underground heat main to the utility room of the farmhouse. The cascade system services heating and hot water, and is made up of two 26kW fully automatic wood pellet boilers
Windhager was specified due to being one of the market leaders and the BioWIN system is very controllable with minimum maintenance as the large hopper needs filling only two or three times a year. Park Farm decided against oil as it has high CO2 emissions and oil prices are constantly rising.
The modulating operation of the BioWIN Exklusiv ensures an excellent energy-saving operation. Using just 30% of its capacity or above, the BioWIN Exklusiv supplies just the right amount of energy where and when required.
Hugh Gay, owner of Park Farm, commented, “We are very happy with the results from Windhager. In comparison to oil we’ve noticed a reduction in cost in the region of over 25%.”
The system is installed with an MES Control system (Modular Energy System), an intelligent, systematic control solution that fully integrates with the BioWIN Exklusiv for optimum production and distribution of heat. The additional technology of the MES offers a series of functions which enable the heat and hot water demands to be accommodated depending on requirements for maximum operating convenience and constant comfort.
The boilers are served by wood pellets which are blown into the 10 tonne bulk capacity hopper. The pellets are then sucked from the large storage hopper into the individual boiler hoppers and then fed when required into the burner bowl. The system is fully automatic in operation with little maintenance required.
The BioWIN cascade system from Windhager has previously had success on a number of projects including a recent installation for the National Trust at Dyffryn Mymbyr and the Badaguish Outdoor Centre in The Cairngorms National Park.
